The Weeping King: Luke 19:28-44

 Revelation 20:1-6 and Luke 19:28-44

The Catastrophic Consequences of Rejecting King Jesus (pt. 3)

INTRO:  Super bowl fever and Messianic hype.

What event(s) triggered Jewish expectations related to the Kingdom of God? (note Luke 19:37b; John 11:1-45; Psalm 118)

In effort to help us understand Revelation 20:4-6 with greater precision we are establishing 4 Central Affirmations of Jesus Concerning the Forthcoming Kingdom of God.

Last Sunday we considered Kingdom affirmation one:

I)                 When the Messianic King Comes, He Will Establish the Kingdom-- just not right away!

(Luke 19:11-27)
This morning we encounter another central Kingdom affirmation:

II)             For Rejecting her King, the Jewish People will be repeatedly trampled upon UNTIL 'the time of the Gentiles' is complete.'

(Luke 19:28-44)

Luke 19:28-44 sermon outline:

1) The Messianic King’s Triumphal Entry (vv. 28-40).

Luke 19:28-40 highlight two things about King Jesus:

A)     His Divine Omniscience

B)     His Prophetic Awareness
(Zech. 9:9; Dan. 9:24-27; Isaiah 53)

2) The Scorned Savior’s Prophetic Lament (vv. 41-44).

Verses 42-44 highlight two frightening components of Jesus’ judgment:

A) Israel's enemy was soon surround them and starve them out.

(Luke 19:43)

B) Israel's Gentile oppressors will sack, pillage, and overcome them.

(Luke 19:44)

When was Jesus’ prophetic lament in Luke 19:41-44 and 21:5-24a initially fulfilled?

In the first century the historian Josephus wrote “the Jewish War.” This historical work chronicles  the utter destruction of Jerusalem by the Romans from 66-70 AD.

Everything the Son of Man predicated came to pass exactly as he said it would!

For rejecting King Jesus (Israel’s Messiah), the Jewish nation has suffered greatly at the hands of various Gentile nations over the past 2,000 years.

   Historical examples include: ____________________________________.

How long will Israel experience the wrath of God? (note carefully Luke 21:24b; see also Rom. 11)

Personal Application-

A)    Act 17:30-31; Galatians 6:7-8.

B)    Romans 9:1-3; 10:1-15; 1:16-17; Matthew 9:36

For Further Reflection/Application:  We must be doers of the Word and not merely hearers

What would it look like if you were to live each day in light of the Coming Kingdom of God?

What does it look like when a believer (in your stage of life) faithfully fleshes out Matthew 6:33f?  How do you know if you truly are “seeking FIRST the Kingdom of God?”
(Don’t forget what we talked about last week regarding faithful “Kingdom Stewardship”).

Do you pray regularly for the return of the King?  Does your soul ache for it? Jesus taught his disciples to pray, “Thy Kingdom come, Thy will be done, on earth as it is in heaven.”  How do trials help us to live and pray as we ought as citizens of a greater kingdom?

When the Jewish masses called Jesus there “king” in Luke 19:38, why didn’t the Messiah establish the long-awaited Kingdom of God on earth during his 1st Coming ministry?

One cannot understand “Palm Sunday” (or Monday) without taking into consideration Luke 9:51 and Luke 20:10.

Why did King Jesus allow the Jewish crowds to coronate him as the “King of Israel” if he knew their loyalty was superficial and their zeal misguided?  It’s almost “as if” he had a death wish (Mark 10:45; Luke 18:31-34; John 1:29).

The era of the Gentiles precedes the era of restored Israel.  Compare Zechariah 9-11 with Zechariah 12-14.  For New Testament commentary on these future events see Romans 9-11.

How does the Assyrian Captivity in 722 BC, and the Babylonian Captive in 586 BC, and the Roman Conquest of Jerusalem in 70 AD, serve as a prophetic warning to our rebellious nation (America) today?   Note also Galatians 6:7-8; Acts 17:22-31 and Romans 1:18-32.

The three major covenants of God with Israel are the Abrahamic, the Davidic, and the New Covenants.  Go back over your sermon notes from Genesis 12, 15, 2 Samuel 7, and Hosea 3 which unpack these glorious promises.  These messages are also available on our website www.lakecountrybible.org
