Politics According to the Bible (Issues that Matter)

Political Issues that are First and Foremost Biblical Issues

1) Creation and Abortion: God is the great Creator (Elohim) and life begins at conception (Psalm 139:13-16). Murder (taking innocent life) is a heinous sin (Exodus 20:13). By principle, the Bible clearly teaches that abortion is murder.

Psalm 139:13-16, For Thou didst form my inward parts; Thou didst weave me in my mother's womb. I will give thanks to Thee, for I am fearfully and wonderfully made; Wonderful are Thy works, And my soul knows it very well.  My frame was not hidden from Thee, When I was made in secret, And skillfully wrought in the depths of the earth.  Thine eyes have seen my unformed substance; And in Thy book they were all written, The days that were ordained for me, When as yet there was not one of them.  The forerunner of the Messiah, John the Baptist, leapt in his mother’s womb (Luke 1:41).  See also Jeremiah 1:5.

Science today (3D ultrasounds) unmistakably affirms the perfect testimony of Scripture.  It is remarkable that those who believe in creation are mockingly called “science deniers” by evolutionist today, yet those who say life begins “when a mother says it begins” (often at birth) are considered wise.  You can be convicted for double homicide for murdering a pregnant mother (eg. Lacy  and Conner Peterson); but if you choose to you can abort a child with protection from the United States Supreme Court.

God created the womb to be a place of safety and protection for unborn infants.  Since 1973 53 million abortions have been “legally” performed in America.  By comparison over 6 million lives were mercilessly taken during the Nazi Holocaust.  The modern day Democrat party celebrates abortion (Planned Parenthood) and the LGBTQ movement.  These are now essential components of the Democratic party platform (see below).  It should also be noted that younger Republicans are increasingly abandoning the conservative social causes that matter most to Bible-believing Christians.

2) MarriageMarriage is a Divine institution because God “invented” marriage.  In Matthew 19:5-6 Jesus’ quotes Genesis and said, 'For this cause a man shall leave his father and mother, and shall cleave to his wife; and the two shall become one flesh '? Consequently they are no longer two, but one flesh. What therefore God has joined together, let no man separate."

Marriage is covenant companionship between one man and one woman for better or for worse, til death do us part.  See also Malachi 2:14.  Marriage is a wonderful gift of God that both Christians and non-Christians can enjoy.  Theologians call this God’s “common grace” (Matt. 5:45).

3) Sex and sexualitySex is God’s gracious love gift to married couples (Proverbs 5:15-23).  Sex is intended to help enhance the “one flesh” intimacy between a husband and his wife.   Sex is intended to be pleasurable for both partners (Song of Songs) and should be selfless (not selfish-see 1 Corinthians 7).  Sex is God’s means for the preservation of the human race (Genesis 1:28- Be fruitful and multiply and fill the earth).  Sadly, many “Christian” youth view sex purely in negative terms because of imbalanced teaching by church leaders and Christian parents alike.

The consistent testimony of God’s Word is that homosexual acts and homosexual desires are sinful (Lev. 18:22; 20:22; Romans 1:24-32; 1 Cor. 6:9-10).  The Bible also warns about the destructive nature of adultery and the dangerous temptations of the adulteress.  Our gracious God and Savior will forgive those who truly repentant (see David’s psalm of confession after he committed adultery with Bathsheba in Psalm 51; note also1 John 1:9).

The Christian church compromises it’s testimony on marriage and sexuality when rampant (unbiblical) divorce and adultery are tolerated.  One example of this is when Christian singer Amy Grant committed adultery and married her lover Vince Gill and many Evangelicals applauded her.  In this vein, I will never forget the time when a former church leader shouted at me in the foyer after I preached a sermon on Matthew 19:1-12, ("Marriage, Divorce, and Remarriage according to King Jesus.”) I realized after this encounter that I had unknowingly struck a nerve.

4) GenderOur Creator God is the One who creates us male and female.  Men and women are fully equal in dignity, value, personhood, and worth.  We are different by design.  To change one’s gender (eg. Bruce Jenner-“Call me Cait”) is to attack the sovereign wisdom of God.   Genesis 1:27, And God created man in His own image, in the image of God He created him; male and female He created them. (see 1 Cor. 6:9, malakoi; Deut 23:17-18; 1 Kings 14:24; 15:12; 22:46; 2 Kings 23:7; cf. Job 36:14).  Progressives are leading the way in celebrating, in defending, and in promoting the transgender movement.  This new emphasis is already being taught in many public schools.  Having said that, it is also something professing “Christian” colleges have begun to face as well (E.G. note the Asuza Pacific College situation with Professor H. Adam Ackley.  See President Obama’s continued assault on religious freedom- Non-Discrimination Executive Order).

5) A theology of work in relation to welfare and charity:  God commands us to be kind and loving to those in need (James 1:27).  The Bible also says if anyone will not work, neither let him eat.  In our town many people completely live off the charity of others.  Some of these individuals could and should work but choose not to.   Many politicians maintain political support from voters by providing food stamps, “free” medical care, childcare, abortion services, etc to those who violate the clear teaching of 2 Thessalonians 3:6-15.  I highly recommend Pastor John MacArthur’s clear exposition of 2 Thessalonians 3:6-15, A Theology of Workwww.gty.org

6) Racism: The sin of racism must be condemned in word and deed.  We must love others as human beings created in the image of God.  Biblical diversity should be celebrated.  The Christian church must continue to lead the way in this.  For “there is neither Jew nor Greek, there is neither slave nor free man, there is neither male nor female; for you are all one in Christ Jesus.  And if you belong to Christ, then you are Abraham's offspring, heirs according to promise (Gal. 3:28-29).

7) Submission to governing authoritiesLet every person be in subjection to the governing authorities. For there is no authority except from God, and those which exist are established by God.  Therefore he who resists authority has opposed the ordinance of God; and they who have opposed will receive condemnation upon themselves.  For rulers are not a cause of fear for good behavior, but for evil. Do you want to have no fear of authority? Do what is good, and you will have praise from the same; for it is a minister of God to you for good. But if you do what is evil, be afraid; for it does not bear the sword for nothing; for it is a minister of God, an avenger who brings wrath upon the one who practices evil. Wherefore it is necessary to be in subjection, not only because of wrath, but also for conscience ' sake.   For because of this you also pay taxes, for rulers are servants of God, devoting themselves to this very thing.  Render to all what is due them: tax to whom tax is due; custom to whom custom; fear to whom fear; honor to whom honor (Rom 13:1-7).

Police brutality and the misuse of authority is sinful.  Those who sinfully abuse those under their care will be judged by God (Romans 12:19).  However, to promote hatred and anger against those in authority (e.g. to riot against the police) is also sinful and destructive to society at large

God has instituted authority structures in order to promote order and harmony.  This is true in the church (Heb. 13:17), in the home (Eph 5:25-6:4), in the workplace (Col. 3:22-4:1), and in society at large (1 Peter 2:13-17).  Tragically, our generation celebrates insubordination and promotes rebellion and moral autonomy (Judges 21:25).  Talk with a law-abiding referee, cop, or pastor in America if you need specific examples of what I am talking about.

Friends these are the difficult days of our life but it is comforting to know that there is “nothing new under the sun.”  God is faithful and He will not give His people more than they can handle.  He will never leave or forsake faithful believers in the line of Christian duty.  “The conclusion then, when all has been heard, is fear God and keep His commandments, because this applies to every person.  For God will bring every act to judgment, everything which is hidden, whether it is good or evil.” (Eccl. 12:13-14)  “And Jesus came up and spoke to them, saying, ‘All authority has been given to Me in heaven and on earth. Go therefore and make disciples of all the nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and the Son and the Holy Spirit, teaching them to observe all that I commanded you; and lo, I am with you always, even to the end of the age.’" (Matt. 28:18-20)
