Contrary to what is often portrayed in the media America is still somewhat split on the issue of gay marriage.  I do not believe however that this will be the case ten to fifteen years from now.  Not when the LGBT movement is actively supported by most media outlets (national and local), by many corporations with massive checkbooks, by the majority of public schools/public universities, by the White House, by apostate pseudo Christians, and by Hollywood and the entertainment industry.  For more on this see my article,"How Did We Get Here? Desensitize, Normalize, Demonize, Idolize, Legalize, (Victimize)!"  Suffice it to say, when President Obama was first elected in 2008 he promised that "change was coming" to America and that he was going to "fundamentally transform" our country.  Both of these predictions have come true over the last seven years with assistance from the United States Supreme Court.

First came abortion rights for all in 1973 and now the legalization of gay marriage in 2015.   What do both of these egregious rulings have in common?  Americans do not want anything standing in the way of their lustful passions (see Romans 1:18-32).  In some regards both decisions were about sex, sex, and more sex (heterosexual and homosexual immorality alike).  Sexual freedom has become far more important than religious freedom to a growing number of people.  As I mentioned before, the gay rights movement that was ushered in on the coattails of the (im)Moral Revolution is here to stay.

I do not believe that either of these Supreme Court decisions will ever be reversed in our nation.  Especially not when so many "traditional marriage" proponents are afraid to share their convictions in the public arena because they fear being marginalized, vilified, demonized, or worse.  For example, in Oregon state a Christian bakery was fined $135,000 for refusing to make a wedding cake for a lesbian wedding.  That's a lot of dough (sorry I could not help myself).
It was Edmund Burke who once said, "The only thing necessary for the triumph of evil is when good men (and women) do nothing."  While some believers cower in a corner, many others, fearful of the contaminating influence of sin, have isolated themselves from the world.

Before I get too far ahead of myself let me provide you with a few local examples that support the assertions I made concerning the LGBT movement and favorable media coverage.  In our local community the Journal Standard published this article which celebrated the "national recognition" Dr. Dutcher is receiving, in large part, because of his doctrinal convictions concerning "LGBT equality." In this article Dutcher talks about bringing the "healing love of Christ to their community for the glory of God."  The article also included a favorable quote from a retired minister who said, “Our community is conservative and what this church has done is a big step,” Arens said. “Deep down, I felt we were a small church, a church of vitality. The Holy Spirit lives through this congregation."  And that's not it.  In the month of June 2013 I read at least three articles that our local newspaper published promoting Dutcher's "Unity Fest."  You can read the articles for yourself here, here, and here.   It seems to me that anytime St. John's wants to publicize and promote their "open and affirming" religious convictions the local paper is eager to help.  In comparison, the local congregation that I pastor is about to celebrate our 170th Anniversary.  What that means is that First Baptist Church has been preaching the gospel in Freeport since 1845.  No matter where you worship in the country that's a long, long time.  In comparison to St. John's Church widespread press coverage, First Baptist will be fortunate if we get one write up in the newspaper highlighting our history, our mission, and our ministry "achievements" in this our 170th year.  For the record, I honestly do not care whether we are publicly recognized for the ministry work we do in our community as this is not why we do what we do (see 1 Corinthians 10:31).  What is concerning is the media bias that so dominates our nation.

If you have not read the book of Jude lately now would be a very good time to do so.  The inspired epistle of Jude is only 25 verses so you could read it before work/school every day in under ten minutes.  Notice the apostolic charge that every believer receives (not just pastors) in verse 3 to "contend earnestly for the faith."    To be continued.
